Intro to Kumiko Woodworking (4hrs)


Class Description

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate (Basic hand tool proficiency recommended). Materials and tools provided. Bring your own tools if preferred. Class Size: 4 people - Space is limited to maximize instruction. Discover the timeless art of Kumiko woodworking in this immersive hands-on workshop, where you'll learn to create the iconic Asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern—one of the most celebrated designs in traditional Japanese joinery. Kumiko is a delicate woodworking technique that combines intricate geometric patterns without nails or glue, relying instead on precise cuts and the natural strength of wood. In this 3 to 4 hour session, you will: - Get a brief introduction to the history and philosophy behind Kumiko woodworking. - Learn about the specific tools and materials used in Kumiko craft. - Gain step-by-step instruction on measuring, cutting, and assembling the Asanoha pattern. - Complete your own small Asanoha panel to take home. This class is perfect for woodworking enthusiasts, artists, and anyone interested in Japanese craftsmanship. No prior experience is necessary—just patience and attention to detail. Takeaway: A finished Asanoha Kumiko panel, a printed guide to the pattern, and foundational skills to continue exploring Kumiko at home. Ages 18+ (16+ with adult supervision) Artist Bio: Caleb Nakia Rogers is a woodworker whose craft is deeply rooted in the Japanese traditions of kumiko and sashimono joinery. Drawing inspiration from centuries-old techniques and the quiet elegance of Japanese aesthetics, Caleb creates intricate wooden pieces that honor both form and function. His work ranges from delicate shoji screens and finely crafted furniture to contemporary interpretations of classic designs. Caleb's philosophy centers on the belief that beauty lies in simplicity and imperfection, echoing the wabi-sabi spirit. His work has been featured in the Lost Art Press and a two hour documentary on Japanese television, focusing primarily on the creation of traditional kiri tansu.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations requested any time after enrollment will receive a refund minus a 15% cancellation and processing fee. Cancellations one week or less before the class start date are only eligible for a credit of 65% of your course fee. That credit can be applied toward a future class or membership. Cancellations less than 24hrs in advance are not eligible for a refund or credit.
