
Intro to Japanese Woodworking (2hrs)
Class Description
Discover the elegance, precision, and philosophy behind traditional Japanese woodworking in this hands-on introductory course. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned woodworker curious about Japanese methods, this class offers an overview of the unique tools and time-honored techniques that define this celebrated craft. The two hour class will cover nokogiri (pull saws), kanna (hand planes), and nomi (chisels). The class will include demos of the tools and give you a chance to try your hand at sawing and planing. Future classes will build on this knowledge and dive into hands-on exploration of specific tools and techniques. Key Topics: - Introduction to Japanese woodworking philosophy - Overview and comparison of Japanese vs. Western tools - Basic hand tool techniques and body mechanics - Work-surfaces - Safety and workshop etiquette No prior woodworking experience required. Artist Bio: Caleb Nakia Rogers is a woodworker whose craft is deeply rooted in the Japanese traditions of kumiko and sashimono joinery. Drawing inspiration from centuries-old techniques and the quiet elegance of Japanese aesthetics, Caleb creates intricate wooden pieces that honor both form and function. His work ranges from delicate shoji screens and finely crafted furniture to contemporary interpretations of classic designs. Caleb's philosophy centers on the belief that beauty lies in simplicity and imperfection, echoing the wabi-sabi spirit. His work has been featured in the Lost Art Press and a two hour documentary on Japanese television, focusing primarily on the creation of traditional kiri tansu.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations requested any time after enrollment will receive a refund minus a 15% cancellation and processing fee. Cancellations one week or less before the class start date are only eligible for a credit of 65% of your course fee. That credit can be applied toward a future class or membership.
