Skill Level: All are welcome Description: Workbenches are the quiet center of the woodworking shop—designed to hold, resist, and endure while work happens around them. In this 1.5-hour talk, we will explore the design, construction and function of woodworking benches, with particular attention given to the bench featured in the photograph. During the first 45 minutes to an hour, we will survey the major types of workbenches and the traditions behind them. We’ll look closely at construction details such as mass, joinery, vises, dog holes, and workholding strategies, and discuss how these choices shape the way a bench is used. The featured bench will serve as a case study, illustrating how historical ideas continue to inform contemporary furniture making. The final 45 minutes will be open and interactive. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, examine the benches up close, and engage with them physically—touching the surfaces, looking underneath, and, where appropriate, trying them out. This portion of the talk is designed to foster conversation, curiosity, and firsthand understanding of how a workbench supports craft at every stage. Snacks and drinks provided. Instructor Bio: Caleb Nakia Rogers is a woodworker whose craft is deeply rooted in the Japanese traditions of kumiko and sashimono joinery. Drawing inspiration from centuries-old techniques and the quiet elegance of Japanese aesthetics, Caleb creates intricate wooden pieces that honor both form and function. His work ranges from delicate shoji screens and finely crafted furniture to contemporary interpretations of classic designs. Caleb's philosophy centers on the belief that beauty lies in simplicity and imperfection, echoing the wabi-sabi spirit. His work has been featured in the Lost Art Press and a two hour documentary on Japanese television, focusing primarily on the creation of traditional kiri tansu.
