Skill Level: Introductory Prerequisite: None Class Size: 2-4 people - Space is limited to maximize instruction. Discover the art and precision of Japanese woodworking in this hands-on, one-hour class focused on crafting your own traditional Japanese marking gauge (kebiki). Often used by master carpenters for centuries, the Japanese marking gauge is an essential layout tool for accurate joinery and clean lines. In this class, you'll learn: - The history and function of the Japanese marking gauge - How to select appropriate materials for durability and accuracy - Basic hand-tool techniques for shaping and assembling the gauge - How to properly set and use the gauge for clean, repeatable marks By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a finished marking gauge and the foundational skills to create more precision tools in your own shop. This class is suitable for beginners with basic hand-tool experience and those interested in traditional woodworking methods. Materials Provided. Ages 18+ (16+ with adult supervision) Artist Bio: Caleb Nakia Rogers is a woodworker whose craft is deeply rooted in the Japanese traditions of kumiko and sashimono joinery. Drawing inspiration from centuries-old techniques and the quiet elegance of Japanese aesthetics, Caleb creates intricate wooden pieces that honor both form and function. His work ranges from delicate shoji screens and finely crafted furniture to contemporary interpretations of classic designs. Caleb's philosophy centers on the belief that beauty lies in simplicity and imperfection, echoing the wabi-sabi spirit. His work has been featured in the Lost Art Press and a two hour documentary on Japanese television, focusing primarily on the creation of traditional kiri tansu.
