Class Description
Skill Level: Intermediate (Basic hand tool proficiency recommended) Prerequisite: Marking gauge class recommended but not required. Class Size: 4 people - Space is limited to maximize instruction. Description: Dive into the elegance and precision of traditional Japanese woodworking with this focused workshop on tansu joinery. In this hands-on class, we will explore the hallmark corner joint of the Japanese tansu chest—a stunning example of both strength and subtle beauty in wood construction. Students will begin with a brief history of tansu furniture, including its cultural significance and regional variations. The primary focus will then shift to one of the key structural elements: the intricate mitered, interlocking corner joint commonly used in antique tansu. Through demonstrations and guided practice, students will: - Understand the functional and aesthetic purpose of the tansu corner joint. -Learn to mark and cut precise joinery using traditional hand tools such as the dozuki saw, kanna (hand plane), and nomi (chisels). - Gain insight into traditional layout techniques and how they support accuracy and repeatability. - Assemble a small sample corner joint, reinforcing the principles of clean execution and tight, glue-free fitting. By the end of the class, participants will create a fully hand-cut sample joint to take home, along with the knowledge to incorporate this joinery into their own projects. What to Bring: - Notebook or sketchpad for notes and layouts - (Optional) Your own sharp chisels or saws Takeaways: - A completed tansu corner joint sample - Hands-on experience with Japanese tools and techniques - A deeper appreciation for the philosophy and craft behind traditional Materials Provided.
